Need For A YouTube India Content Regulatory Body.

With over 65 mn monthly active users & 1200+ channels with 1 mn+ subs, YouTube India is getting cluttered each passing day. Almost daily we come across a creator who is on the rise getting viral and all for his unique content.

The definition of unique is anything that gets the eyeballs of a certain thousand or lakhs of average Indian audience who do not have anything to do other than glorifying their caste and ingrained patriarchy in them.

Let’s admit the fact that India as a country is in a pathetic condition. Covid19 pandemic has revealed the lack and poor medical infrastructure. But the main issue that’s extremely troublesome is the tragic wave of pseudo nationalism or Hindutva that’s running in the blood of the upper caste pseudo average Indians.

What’s problematic is that India has become more intolerant than ever. All thanks to the current NaMo Government that has fuelled it to a great extent. Not implying that things didn’t happen in the Congress rule but it has gotten worse since 2014.

The recent vandalism of the Indian habitat centre Mumbai for a joke by a comedian Agrima Joshua has once again brought the Indian Patriarchy on the forefront.

India has been a patriarchal country since its inception. Things are changing but let’s admit that it’s still a long shot. Things and thoughts that are ingrained in the blood don’t go away easily.

That Patriarchy has also found a place on social media or let’s say social media has amplified it to a great extent because it’s free. Anyone can freely vomit their thoughts and the problem is that such people/creator is applauded for the filth he serves.

One such creator is Hindustani Bhau who makes videos on topical events. And is loved/hailed for his unique abusive style of speaking and presentation in which he abuses everyone in Hindi and Marathi. The audience has made him a hero. Converted his videos in memes and he keeps resurfacing every day in memes or with his new videos where he is doing the same thing. Abusing and threatening people. What he does is just expresses his fuckall thoughts on anything thats topical.

I think he doesn’t even know what he is doing because such creators just care about views, likes and subscribers and their fame. And ironically, the audience obliges him. Set aside the lame average Indian audience; Big corporates like Viacom cash on their popularity by giving them a National platform like calling them on Bigg Boss validating their filth. So, In the end, everything becomes a business.

There’s a similar Creator I discovered called Shubham Mishra who is a crasser and direct version of Hindustani Bhau and vomits abuses faster than him.

Now, I am guilty of enjoying, laughing and sometimes sharing memes of Hindustani Bhau. I don’t think I am ever gonna like any meme after I saw Gaurav Kapur’s video where he is explaining why these creators are a threat to India. Not that I wasn’t aware of the fact but perhaps I never thought it wisely. He or such Creators were just a recreational tool for me.

And hence, I feel, this calls for a YouTube Content Regulatory Body that finds such hateful content and curbs it or bans such creators altogether. The terms and conditions of the YouTube channel should be permanently amended to stop these hate peddlers. This cannot be a government’s job because the government will always be biased towards its ideology. It should be the company’s protocol.

They might add some prerequisites before someone makes a channel. Ask a few questions before the signup. Categorize the creators into grades from A to E. A being the best and E being the worst and set their payout likewise and give them a motivation to improve their grades or ratings by making good content.

Due to the unfair YouTube algorithm, many brilliant creators suffer. Suffer in the sense — They put in everything in the making of an informative, entertaining video but in the end, are left with lesser views and subscribers. Because apparently it’s all about clickbait. And click baits are directly proportional to topical events. And it’s not just YouTube Algorithm’s fault; IT’S WE THE AUDIENCE.

So, unless we do something about what we watch, like, share, subscribe, sensationalise, patronize we won’t be able to see the change. Personally I am now going to be extremely careful about what content I look up to or laugh on or even refer to in personal life.

Keeping it short; There are many things that can be done. We as an audience need to evolve to start with & It’s the need of the hour that something should be done to save the country.
